Power for Progress
Power is a thrust area for the industry & for the overall infrastructure development of India. Vedanta has decided to shape India’s infrastructure by developing an Independent Power Plant. Sterlite Energy Ltd, the energy arm of Vedanta Resources Plc, has taken a major initiative towards the advancement of the power infrastructure by developing two thermal power projects, one in Jharsuguda, Orissa and another in Talwandi, Punjab, with a combined proposed installed capacity of 4,380 MW.

We leverage on the experience of the Vedanta Group in building and managing captive power plants to develop, operate and manage our power projects. The Vedanta Group has been building and managing captive power plants since 1997 and, as of September 30, 2009, the total capacity of its captive power plants and wind power plants was approximately 2,464 MW. The Vedanta Group is currently constructing power plants with an installed capacity of 6,380 MW and expects to have power plants with a capacity of approximately 3,334 MW operational by the end of fiscal 2010.

As a prime advocate of sustainable development, Sterlite Energy Ltd. puts a premium on environmentally friendly construction technology. The plant employs HCSD system for ash disposal, which results in very low consumption of water compared to wet slurry system. The IPP would therefore be a zero effluent discharge plant.
